What to Expect

  • Ear Checkup

    The Ear Care Practitioner (ECP) will ask for your permission to examine your ear(s) using the digital video otoscope called the Tympa device. This allows examination of the ear canal and eardrum.

  • Hearing Test

    A hearing check involves placing headphones over both ears. The Tympa device will play a range of different sounds at varying loudness and pitch through the headphones. The aim of the test is to establish the quietest sounds you can hear and identify any potential hearing weakness. You may experience discomfort to some loud or high pitch sounds in the test, but this tends to be temporary.

  • Ear Wax Removal

    Ear wax removal may be necessary to relieve fullness/blocked sensation of the ear, and/or to enable otoscopy and hearing assessment. If the wax cannot be fully removed, a second or third appointment may be required with further softening of the wax for a few days between visits using alternative softeners as advised.

    Two methods of wax removal may be used during your appointment, microsuction and/or manual removal using an instrument.

  • An otoscope is a hand-held tool with a light and a magnifying lens that allows our audiologist to conduct an examination of your ear canal. Our audiologists will inspect the health of the ear canal and eardrum. They will also be able to identify any concerns regarding wax build-up in the ears.

  • We recommend scheduling routine hearing tests every 3 to 5 years. If you notice changes in your hearing or are experiencing hearing loss, we advise more frequent testing, typically once a year. This approach ensures timely identification of any changes in your hearing and establishes a comprehensive medical history for your hearing health, facilitating prompt intervention if issues arise in the future.

  • We understand the importance of early detection of hearing issues in children. We offer testing for infants and toddlers, including a hearing test at birth to identify any potential issues. Our comprehensive testing services are available for children of all ages, ensuring their auditory health is prioritised from the very beginning

    Give Yourself Plenty of Time

    Rushing to an appointment can increase stress levels. Arriving with plenty of time allows you to relax, fill out any necessary paperwork, and mentally prepare for the test without feeling rushed.

    Arrive in a Relaxed Frame of Mind

    Being in a relaxed state enhances your ability to concentrate and respond accurately during the hearing test. Anxiety can impact test results, so arriving in a calm state contributes to a more accurate assessment of your hearing.

    Deep and steady breathing is known to activate the body's relaxation response, calming the nervous system. This can help alleviate anxiety and improve your overall experience during the hearing test.

    Sit Comfortably
